| Following the
disposal of the our highly successful first "N" layout,
"Ravens Park", we decided that we needed a simple
design of layout which would give prototypical operation of
medium to long scale length trains in a realistic setting.
It was felt that a coastal location would be scenically interesting
and yet would be "time and location neutral". This
would enable group members to run a wide variety of trains,
including British, European, American and Japanese - all of
which are modelled by members of the group. The appeal of
this basic concept has resulted in a large increase in group
membership in recent months; our two latest recruits model
Swiss and Rhodesian(!)
The coastal location was very much inspired by the former
Great Western main line between Dawlish Warren and Teignmouth.
However, this type of location can be found throughout the
world and a Southern Pacific Daylight will look just as good
running on the layout as a Castle or King.
Rather than have just a double track passing along the sea
wall, it was decided to incorporate a pair of long running
loops to provide some operational interest. These loops will
enable faster trains, e.g. express passenger, to pass slower
ones, e.g. local passenger, parcels, and freight trains. This
will also give an opportunity for viewers to have a closer
look at the locomotives and rolling stock held in the loops.
It was decided not to model a station, as it was felt that
the layout would be very much in the mould of "watching
the trains go by" as if one was on the sea wall or the
cliffs above.
In the fiddle yard at the back there are three through loops
in each direction, each capable of holding three medium length
trains. In addition, there are two terminal roads facing in
each direction, each capable of holding one medium or two
short trains, to allow "out and back" workings.
It is expected that with up to 26 trains on the layout, it
will take a reasonable length of time for the operating sequence
to be completed and for the same train to reappear, but it
may not necessarily be in the same direction, or with the
same motive power!
Baseboard construction and track laying has been completed
and wiring of the track and pointwork is in progress. Once
all of the wiring has been completed and tested, the scenic
treatment can be started. Finally, once the scenery is completed,
we can get on with running trains and showing the layout on
the exhibition circuit.
If you model "N", British or foreign, ancient or
modern, you're very welcome to visit our Clubroom any Friday
night (except August!) and meet the happy band of modellers
behind this developing layout. We like to think that you'll
like what you see and want to join us!
