Twickenham Junction.  4mm scale, 16.5mm Gauge

Twickenham Junction is an ambitious project to recreate the Victorian station at Twickenham as though re-development had not taken place during the 1940s/50s, leaving the rather ramshackle original station in use. It is not as straightforward as first appears as the viewing side would naturally be from the station forecourt, resulting in the Strawberry Hill line going off into the audience which was clearly not feasible; also the curves of the lines towards Feltham and to Strawberry Hill make the scenic illusion at that end of the layout highly complex. The scenic area is 25 foot long and around 3 foot deep.

The layout is set in the early 1960s partly to coincide with the inauguration of T&DMRC and also to allow a wide range of trains to be operated.   The model will showcase Southern Region steam and electric traction and some early diesels. Members are building and preparing stock for future exhibition use to replicate a typical Summer Saturday service along with various extras of which we have photos or references.

All of the principal buildings for Twickenham Junction are scratchbuilt and many are largely complete – there’s still more to do though!   Track-laying is mostly complete using C&L and SMP plain track with handbuilt points. The model will be DCC operated and work on wiring the layout is just starting. Twickenham Junction will be the first scenic front to be linked to the Club’s 14-road OO/HO Common Fiddle Yard.
